Habit 3 of [[The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People]]

# Summary

Habit 2 decides what matters; Habit 3 is living by it day to day. It means organising your time around your priorities and having the discipline to say no to things that are merely urgent. Covey treats this as self-management, not time management.

# Key ideas

- **The time management matrix**: Every activity is either urgent or not, and important or not.

| | Urgent | Not urgent |
|---|---|---|
| **Important** | Quadrant I: crises, deadlines, pressing problems | Quadrant II: planning, prevention, relationships, learning, renewal |
| **Not important** | Quadrant III: interruptions, some calls and meetings | Quadrant IV: trivia, time wasters |

- **Quadrant II is the heart of effectiveness**: Important but not urgent work never demands attention, so it gets neglected. Time spent there shrinks Quadrant I, because problems are prevented before they become crises.
- **Saying no**: Time for Quadrant II has to come from Quadrants III and IV. It is easier to say no when a stronger "yes" to your priorities is clear.
- **Weekly planning**: Plan by the week, not the day. Identify your roles, choose one or two goals for each, schedule them, then adapt daily.
- **Schedule your priorities**: Do not just prioritise what is already on your schedule.
- **Delegation**: Stewardship delegation agrees on desired results, guidelines, resources, accountability and consequences, and leaves the method to the other person. "Gofer" delegation dictates every step and builds no capability.

# In practice

- Track a week of your time and sort it into the four quadrants.
- Name one Quadrant II activity that would make a large difference if done regularly, and schedule it.
- Hold a weekly planning session before the week starts.
