**user**: summarize deep work in the note
[Timestamp: 2026/10/12 20:31:43]

**ai**: The `# Summary` section of [[Deep Work]] was empty, so I wrote the summary into it. Your vault has almost nothing on the book itself ([[📕 Deep Work]] is marked unread and only links back to the concept), so the content comes from my general knowledge of Cal Newport's book, not from your notes.

What the summary now says:

- **Definition**: deep work is distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive limits, creates new value and is hard to replicate. Shallow work is the opposite: logistical, low-demand tasks such as email and meetings.
- **Hypothesis**: the ability to do deep work is becoming rarer at the same time as it becomes more valuable, so those who cultivate it will thrive.
- **Why it matters**: it is valuable (fast learning and elite output), rare (modern workplaces push towards shallowness) and meaningful.
- **The four rules**:
  1. Work deeply, using rituals, a scheduling philosophy and a shutdown ritual.
  2. Embrace boredom, since concentration is a trained skill.
  3. Quit social media, keeping only tools whose benefits clearly outweigh their costs.
  4. Drain the shallows by planning every minute and capping shallow work.

I also added a "Related notes" list linking to [[On the Neurochemistry of Deep Work]], [[On Productivity and the Deep Life]], [[Finishing the work day procedure]], [[Deep Habits - The Importance of Plannning Every Minute of Your Work Day]] and [[📝 Maker vs. Manager - How Your Schedule Can Make or Break You]]. I did not open the last three, so those links are based on their titles only.
